Oh please. No Debate on the Debates

Filed under: Debate '08 Invasion — thorninthebruin @ 9:10 am

Look people, this is why there is a bipartisan Commission on Presidential Debates. Candidates and parties (on both sides) are such a pain in the ass when it comes to details for confrontations, all of a sudden the real issues of the election season get clouded over by the overtones of why one candidate chooses not to debate another candidate…and some weird donkey meets elephant mating ritual ensues that most of us could care less about!

It is never as simple as, “hey, let’s get together over at Bubba’s place, have a beer or two, and exchange political spin.” By the time accommodations for media, secret service, traffic control, catering, make-up, lighting, and party haggling/posturing are addressed, these things take on the dimensions of a Normandy landing. Nobody really wants that. Really!

Look at Belmont University as an example. They are hosting the town hall presidential debate on a campus with a student population approaching 5,000. Due to all of the BS described above, there is no guarantee that more than a few students will ever set foot in their own debate hall/arena and it seats 5,000 people. Lucky for Belmont students and their CMT Award Show experiences, we are getting used to all of the hassle and little of the benefit…let’s debate that, why don’t we?

OK. There will be three, fully-televised, presidential debates this year. That is probably two more than most of us want to (or will) watch anyway.

  1. Good points Mysterious Band of Writers. Keep bringing the debate around the debate. But since you guys are anonymous, be sure to keep it as civil as you can. Not having a photo of yourself plastered next to your comments isn’t an excuse to libel or use non-standard practices of a fair discussion, but so far I’m impressed with the tone and content. I’ll continue to read…

  3. Nate,
We’re talking about lifting the curtain from the Mysterious Band of Writers, maybe….and libel isn’t anywhere on the horizon. Thanks for catching the broken links. We’ll have to start feeding our HTML gods something besides Jolt.
